Sunrise Park
Conversion of 8,400 sq ft of Petaluma park lawn into a water-wise native habitat garden.
A turf-to-habitat conversion along Sunrise Park in Petaluma, designed by Daniel Sonnenberg during his time at the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center in collaboration with Daily Acts. The project transformed 8,400 square feet of the park's sidewalk mow strips into a water-wise landscape planted with 695 native and climate-adaptive species, providing critical habitat and food for local butterflies, bees, and birds while saving an estimated 166,470 gallons of water per year. The plant palette and design were shaped by community input gathered at a Daily Acts neighborhood meeting, and the site serves as a pilot for the City of Petaluma Parks and Recreation Department, modeling maintenance strategies for non-functional turf conversions ahead of Assembly Bill 1572's 2027 phase-out of potable water on non-functional turf.
